Chapter 2 – What to Publish (Part B)

Now that you have defined what you know and can write about (i.e. publish) you need to match up the market demand for the topics you have chosen.  So how do you find out what the world wants to know.  That is easy !

Google has a key word tool that makes it easy to see what the world is asking of the Google search engine.  Just type in your topics and you will see how many people are searching each month for such information.

Go to: https://adwords.google.com/o/Targeting/Explorer?__u=1000000000&__c=1000000000&ideaRequestType=KEYWORD_IDEAS#search.none

Type in your topic, example Accommodation and bingo keyword tool tells you that there are 9,140,000 global searches.  It also tells you that Adwords competition for the keyword Accommodation is high and the average cost per click that an advertiser pays Google is US$1.73 per click of which they share some of that revenue with you if the Google Adwords are hosted on your website (Information is accurate at the time of this blog posting).

What you will also notice is the keyword tool also tells you what the other derivatives of accommodation that people are searching for via Google search engine such as “cheap accommodation” or “new york accommodation”.

One of the problems with choosing a broad topic such as accommodation is you will find it difficult for your website to be found by the search engines (Google included) and as such are likely to not have high enough traffic through your website and therefore not many people will see Google Adwords. The word Accommodation yields 165 million website results when you type it into google.com.

So choose a specific topic with fewer searches so you will have less websites competing for eyeballs but still sufficient advertisers wishing to pay for such Adwords.  Any example of this is: After Shave which at the time of this blog yielded the following:

  • 368,000 monthly global searches
  • Medium competition
  • Adwords cost = US$0.92 per click
  • 7.5 million website results via google.com search

So play around with your list of topics to publish and find an item or two that yields enough interest each month without enormous competition and pays reasonable click through advertising rates with Google Adwords.

Chapter 2 – What to Publish (Part A)

I have broken up this topic into two chapters as you need to consider the matter of what to publish by considering two key points.  The first is what knowledge you have that people using Google may find interesting.  So what do you know or are passionate about.

I found this a difficult thing to uncover topics that I would enjoy writing about.  So how did I open my mind to interesting things to start writing about that those surfing the Internet might find of interest?

  1. Write a list of things that interest me -> 7 topics
  2. Ask a friend what they think I know allot about – 2 topics
  3. Then I got stuck with potential topics ……… the way I broke the mental block will make you laugh.  I picked up the printed yellow pages and looked at the index.  This is what I found on the first page of the index that expanded my topics to write about.
  • Accommodation – I have stayed in many hotels and apartments all across the country and I have an opinion on what I like and dislike.
  • Accountants – I have met a few and had dealings with many so I think I can publish a website of value to others on this topic.
  • Acupuncture – I have had many treatments and can launch a great blog on this topic.
  • Aftershaves – I have used them for around 30 years and have an opinion or two.
  • Agents – Real Estate – yes I have dealt with some over the years and have some firm views of how to pick a good one and get the best out of their services.

The yellow pages index is an excellent prompt for your mind to open up ideas to write about.  Take the following one that a young mother struggling with ideas to write about told me.

A mother not working and at home raising young children was struggling with what topics she could publish on the Internet.  She cracked the mental block by looking around her home and then it dawned on her that since leaving the workforce to have children she had experienced firsthand an enormous amount of things that other new mothers might find invaluable.  This mother launched her website and gave her opinions on the following; toys, kids clothes, hunting down bargains, recipes for children, keeping fit post birth, saving money on the weekly grocery bills, etc.

Take an hour out of your day and put your mind to listing topics that you could publish.  Don’t forget the yellow pages index if writers block hits you early.

Chapter 1 – Publish It!

In order to make money with Google Adsense you need to have at least one website or blog.

In the “good old days” to be a publisher you needed to have a printing press, skill at writing, a distribution network to sell your newspaper or magazine.  As you are aware the Internet has done away with the need for the typical publishing empire capital (cash) and now anyone can put their words onto the net for free (or near free).  Before the Internet the cost of publishing was limited to the likes of News Corporation with its massive war chest of cash where it could publish newspapers, magazines, TV and movies.  The Internet has more than taken the wind out of the big companies edge and allows average people like you and me to “make a buck” from publishing.

Publishing is just a way of describing writing a story or article and releasing it to others to read.  The Internet allows you to publish your story (i.e. thoughts) to a global audience whether it is in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Mandarin, Korean, Deutsche or Flemish.

When you publish to a website or blog you then have the opportunity to place advertising alongside your words just like the News Corporations of the world place advertising in all their forms of published media.  And Google Adsense wants you to publish its ads as part of its strategy to be the biggest and best source of relevance ads for your readers.  The money is there if you can publish the words that bring traffic to your site.

The Google Adsense Goldmine

Google Adsense is a recent river of gold that I lucked upon.  I have been using Google Adwords to drive traffic to my website to sell my products globally.  I have found it a very inexpensive way to capture sales.   What I didn’t realise until 2009 is that the other side of Adwords is Adsense!

Adsense is a river of gold that you can mine.  I call it Adsense Money which is nothing like Monopoly money because you can spend it.  So how big is the income opportunity with Google Adsense you might ask?  Well I have checked out the size of the prize at the Google Investors Relations Site (http://investor.google.com/earnings.html) and found that in the 4th quarter of 2010 Google paid out US$1.74 BILLLION in Traffic Acquisition Costs (aka Adsense monies paid to publishers that show Google Adwords).  So in 90 days Google paid on average US$19.3 MILLION PER DAY to publishers that show Google Ads on their websites.  Further the amount they paid for traffic acquisition increased by around 20% compared to the same period in 2009.  WOW.

So ladies and gentlemen with 19.3 MILLION big ones on offer from Google each and every day I have decided to have a change of career.  I have taken up publishing websites and hosting Google Adwords to get my share of the 19.3 MILLION Google Adsense Money.

In future postings to this blog I will tell you my secrets to maximising the Adsense Money on offer.
